We believe that children learn best through a ‘hands on’ activity based approach to mathematics with extensive use of concrete materials in all year levels. Maths lessons are based on a Michael Ymer inspired structure where students start with a game to get their brains thinking mathematically. They complete a whole class activity and then break off into an individual or small group task. Most learning is done through open ended tasks that allow children to achieve at their own stage of learning without the barriers of a grade level. We focus on inquiry and questioning, with problem solving, connections to the real world and thinking skills forming an important part of our program. We consider ICT and calculators to be powerful tools that provide students with the opportunity to investigate a broad range of mathematical ideas and applications.
